By Jim O'Connell, Ceridian vice president of Government Relations and HR Policy

Only a half a dozen years into the 21st century the outlines of a new world of work are already emerging. Like our children and grandchildren growing before our eyes, the signs of change are unmistakable.

Change is evident in technology, the organization of work, the employer-employee relationship, the role of labor unions, skills, demographics including immigration, the role of government, competition now on a global scale with China rising, and in benefits, health care, pensions and compensation. And the pace of change is quickening.

Five megatrends will shape the 21st century world of work:

  1. Productivity is king: The More With Less Economy
  2. Uncertainty in the workplace: Who Can You Trust?
  3. The new independence: From Entitlement to Ownership
  4. Consumer-directed health care: Rx for Rising Costs?
  5. Retirement security: Pension Deficit Disorder?
